Learning Independence through Entrepreneurship

Young people say earning big money and having independence from an overbearing boss are prime factors in starting their own businesses.

That’s according to the seventh annual “Teens and Entrepreneurship” survey, a nationwide poll.

About 60 percent of those polled say they are interested in starting their own business. About 700 teens between the ages of 13 and 18 participated in the poll.

The strong interest in business is a good sign, because it's through operating a business that kids get powerful lessons about how money works. Just doing a financial statement teaches volumes: it's not how much money we make, it's how much money we get to keep.

Think about it. What if we managed our personal finances with that level of understanding?

Entrepreneurship is a highly effective avenue for teaching about personal finance. Our programs use this method with great success.

Soup Anyone?

David Ansell, the famous "SoupPeddler", spent a morning with us. He told the story of his business beginnings, and all the ways he has grown his company. We got to see the bicycle that started it all, and heard funny stories from David about his unique business. Then we enjoyed some of his great vegetarian chili.

Let's Get Down to Business!

Enterprise Plants business owners working on product preparation.

There are always innovative new ways to do things, and sharing those ideas makes the business better.

The marketing team made some interesting signs that really let people know what we were up to. The signs got potential customers interested in our business and told them our mission statement.

On Tuesday, we jumped on the Dillo and went downtown to Wahoo's Fish Taco restaurant to learn from Gary and Jourdan.

They shared the story of how they got started with their franchise and their plans for the future of their business.

We had a fabulous lunch at Wahoo's, then got back to "business" getting ready to start selling plants the next day.

The market research team located plants at a reduced price to purchase for our business, and sent the Camp Director shopping. The product development team was busy designing our product packaging and recipe cards.

Enterprise Plants, Production

Here you are producing your product.

You all worked hard, and sometimes with stinky substances, and made alot of containers of herbs to sell. The product planning (determining how many plants and which ones) was done well, because we had just the right combination and just the right amount.

Please post your comments and memories.
